  2.                             THE GOLDEN LAMPSTAND

  4.          The lampstand stood on the south side of the Holy Place,  directly op- 
  5. posite the table of shewbread (Exodus 40:24).                                   
  6.                                                                                 
  7.          The material  of which it was made was  pure gold.  It  consisted of a 
  8. pedestal,  and an upright shaft.  From this shaft,  probably at equal distances 
  9. from  one another,  there projected three  branches on each  side.  The central 
  10. shaft  and the six branches  terminated in sockets,  into which the seven lamps 
  11. were placed.

  13.          The size  of the lampstand  is not given in the  Bible  description of 
  14. it.  Jewish tradition  assigns it a height of above  five feet and a breadth of 
  15. about three and one half feet.

  17.          The lamps themselves  were also made of gold.  These were  placed upon 
  18. the top of the  central  shaft and the branches.  The lamps  were supplied with 
  19. pure olive  oil.  The lamps were lighted  at the time of the evening  sacrifice 
  20. (Exodus 30:8),  and extinguished, trimmed,  and filled at the time of the morn- 
  21. ing sacrifice (Exodus 30:7).
